Bed shape to evaluate

Each shape has its own measurements. Switching retains entries separately and clears results; a lying length never becomes a curled diameter.

Units for all measurements

Measure in a natural extended lying position, from the furthest occupied point at the front to the furthest at the back. Include paws when they extend beyond the nose or rump.

Measure across the widest occupied part of that same sleeping position, including extended legs. This is occupied space, not a recommended comfort margin.

OPTIONAL · USE THE ACTUAL INTERIOR

Check a dog bed you’re considering

Enter the usable sleeping surface, excluding bolsters. Confirm the meaning of each dimension separately. Exterior dimensions cannot substitute, and no bolster thickness is guessed.

Show your dog’s guidance first. Missing or invalid candidate dimensions do not block that result.

All entries use cm. Change units above; original measurements are retained.

Copy the actual clear sleeping dimension from the manufacturer, or measure the usable surface. Leave blank if unavailable.

Confirm usable interior space only when the endpoints exclude raised sides and match the selected bed shape. For a flat mattress, check that its full surface is unobstructed. If only exterior size is published, confirm interior dimensions before purchase.

How to measure your sleeping dog

Let your dog settle naturally; do not force a posture. Use a tape along the floor or sleeping surface beside the occupied footprint. Check twice and record the position and units. Standing body length from the crate guide is a different measurement.

Stretched sleep: length and width

Measure in a natural extended lying position, from the furthest occupied point at the front to the furthest at the back. Include paws when they extend beyond the nose or rump.

Measure across the widest occupied part of that same sleeping position, including extended legs. This is occupied space, not a recommended comfort margin. If width is unavailable, length guidance can still be calculated, with width explicitly unevaluated.

A: furthest front to rear point, including paws. B: widest occupied width in the same sleeping position. Schematic, not to scale; physical fit is not simulated.

Curled sleep: footprint diameter

Measure the widest distance across the whole footprint while your dog is naturally curled up. Do not reuse a stretched sleeping length. This is the widest occupied distance, even if the footprint is not a perfect circle.

Check that a circular interior accommodates that posture with practical room to move. It may not cover fully stretched sleep.

A rectangular example

A measured 30 in (76.2 cm) lying length gives 39 in – 42 in usable length (99.06 cm – 106.68 cm). A measured 19 in (48.26 cm) width remains occupied width, with no prescribed comfort margin.

A usable 39 × 19 in surface is within the length reference and meets measured width, but those two comparisons do not verify comfort or physical fit. A usable 35-inch length accommodates the 30-inch footprint but is below this additional-room reference. A 43-inch length exceeds the reference and is not automatically unsuitable.

A round example

A 22 in (55.88 cm) curled footprint can be compared with a confirmed 24 in (60.96 cm) usable diameter. It meets the entered footprint; additional room and stretched sleep remain unevaluated. No numeric curled-diameter allowance is added.

The reference is published general guidance. Shape, movement, posture changes, support, and manufacturer instructions still matter. Displays are rounded for readability; real tape measurements do not have millimeter-level certainty.

THE SURFACE INSIDE THE SIDES

Interior versus exterior bed dimensions

Outer dimensions describe the product’s whole physical footprint. Usable sleeping dimensions describe the clear surface your dog can lie on. Bolsters can reduce that area substantially; confirm which endpoints a product listing uses.

Bed exterior versus usable sleeping surfaceA is the whole exterior bed footprint. B is the smaller clear mattress surface inside raised bolsters. Compare the dog with B; no fixed subtraction can recover it from A.AB
A is exterior size. B is usable sleeping space. Ask the manufacturer for B if it is not published. Schematic, not to scale; physical fit is not simulated.

Find the sleeping-surface specifications

  1. Open the manufacturer’s specifications or sizing section.
  2. Look for inner sleep area, sleeping surface, or usable interior dimensions.
  3. Confirm length and width, or clear circular diameter, exclude bolsters.
  4. If only exterior size is published, ask for usable dimensions before purchase.

For a flat mattress, exterior length and width may describe the usable surface, but confirm it is unobstructed. No fixed thickness or percentage is subtracted by this tool.

Bed shapes and sleeping styles

  1. 01

    Curled

Round, donut, or bolster beds may appeal to a dog that prefers a compact curl. Measure the widest occupied diameter and confirm the actual interior shape. No automatic sleeping-style multiplier is used.

  2. 02

    Stretched out

An extended posture needs a long, unobstructed sleeping surface. Include paws extending beyond the nose or rump, and check width across the same position.

  3. 03

    Mixed or leaning

For mixed sleep, measure the greater occupied space rather than assuming a curl covers every posture. Raised sides offer a place to lean but reduce the clear surface. Watch how the dog uses the bed.

Orvis’s sizing guide explains that labels vary by design and suggests observing the individual dog’s sleep preferences. Shape informs what to measure; it does not invent a numerical multiplier.

Puppies and growing dogs

Remeasure as your puppy grows. A bed that accommodates today’s footprint may become small; extra space may leave room for growth, while today’s access and sleeping area still need to be practical. Consider cleaning, removable covers, materials, and chewing behavior.

No adult weight or body dimensions are predicted from breed. If the bed sits inside a crate, also check usable crate space and bedding headroom; bed length guidance is not a crate-sizing formula.

Support, cleaning, and easy access

For older dogs or those with reduced mobility, consider ease of stepping on and off, mattress support, bed thickness, bolster height, slip resistance, and washable covers. These are purchasing considerations, not medical calculations.

HELPFUL ANSWERS

Dog bed sizing questions

What size dog bed does my dog need?

Start with the space your dog occupies while sleeping. This rectangular tool adds Snoozer’s published additional-room reference to lying length, then checks usable bed dimensions independently. Width and curled diameter are occupied baselines only. Check the selected design’s instructions and room to move.

How should I measure my dog for a bed?

Observe a natural sleeping position. Measure the furthest front and rear occupied points, including paws if they extend farther than the nose or rump. Measure the widest occupied width in that same position. For curled sleep, measure the widest distance across the entire curled footprint.

Is dog bed size based on breed or weight?

Breed and weight do not capture an individual dog’s proportions or sleeping posture. Manufacturer weight guidance can be additional context for a particular product, but it does not replace sleeping measurements. This calculator requires neither breed nor weight.

Should I measure my dog curled or stretched?

Measure the posture you want the bed to accommodate. A curled footprint can help compare a round bed, while extended length and width describe stretched sleep. A round bed that contains the curled footprint may not accommodate the fully stretched position.

What if my dog sleeps in different positions?

Observe several resting positions and measure the one that occupies more space. Check length and width together for that posture. Do not assume a compact curled measurement covers stretched-out sleep.

Are dog bed sizes standardized?

No universal Small, Medium, or Large dimensions apply across designs. Orvis explains that labels differ between its own bed styles. Compare actual usable space, with the measurement endpoints confirmed for the chosen model.

How much extra room should a bed have?

Snoozer’s general lying-length guidance adds 9–12 inches. DogSize.Net uses that interval for rectangular length only. We add no arbitrary width or curled-diameter allowance; consider practical room for movement and follow the specific manufacturer’s guidance.

Do bolsters reduce sleeping space?

Raised sides occupy part of the overall bed footprint. The clear mattress surface may be much smaller. There is no universal thickness or percentage to subtract; obtain the product’s actual usable interior dimensions.

Should I buy a larger bed for a puppy?

Measurements change during growth, so remeasure regularly. Extra space may leave room for growth, but check that today’s sleeping area and access are practical. Washability and chewing behavior also matter. This tool makes no adult-size prediction.

How do I check the inside size of a bed?

Look for specifications called inner sleep area, sleeping surface, or usable interior dimensions. Confirm the clear endpoints exclude bolsters. If only exterior size is given, ask the manufacturer before comparing or purchasing; the checker cannot infer interior space.

Bed sizing method and sources

Snoozer’s sizing guide provides a general 9–12-inch addition to a normal lying front-to-back measurement. DogSize.Net uses it for rectangular usable length. We keep the original measurement separate from the added room and use exactly 2.54 cm per inch.

Snoozer includes round beds and refers to diameter, but its numeric rule uses front-to-back lying endpoints. DogSize.Net does not transfer that rule to a separately measured widest curled footprint. Round results compare occupied diameter only; additional room is not evaluated.

Measuring width separately, retaining shape-specific inputs, requiring usable-dimension confirmation, and comparing axes independently are DogSize.Net engineering choices. No width multiplier, guessed bolster deduction, universal S/M/L chart, or overall fit verdict is used.
