Added to each measurement:
Unrounded values drive arithmetic and comparison. “≈” identifies a rounded display.
Check a crate’s dimensionsEveryday home-crate guidance. Length and height alone cannot check width, turning, lying naturally, door clearance, construction, or transport suitability.
Full body length is different from snout length and recovery reach. See the muzzle and recovery cone measuring guides for those separate endpoints.
AN OPTIONAL SECOND STEP
Check a crate you’re considering
Enter its actual usable interior dimensions, not exterior measurements or a nominal length label. This comparison does not assess width, doors, construction, or transport suitability.
Uses the units selected above: cm.
Calculate your dog’s guidance above first. The optional checker does not block that calculation.
TWO INDEPENDENT DIMENSION CHECKS
Dimension comparison
Length and height will be assessed separately. A match to both reference intervals does not prove fit.
Length comparison
Height comparison
Above the upper target means more space than this reference interval; it does not automatically mean the crate is unsuitable. Check the actual dog, divider position, and manufacturer’s instructions.
TWO MEASUREMENTS, TWO POSTURES
How to measure your dog for a crate
Use one consistent method. This calculator follows Zoetis Petcare’s nose-to-tail-base length and sitting head-height method.
- Let your dog stand naturally on all four legs on a level floor.
- Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Do not include the full tail.
- Then let your dog sit upright, without forcing a pose.
- Measure vertically from the floor to the top of the head. Do not stop at the shoulder.
- Record both values with their unit, then measure again to check. Enter the dog’s measurements without adding clearance yourself.
- For upright ears or a different standing height, confirm sufficient usable headroom using the particular manufacturer’s method. Sitting, standing, and shoulder heights are not interchangeable.
A MEASUREMENT REFERENCE
Dog crate size chart and clearance guide
The table describes a measurement method. It does not invent universal Small, Medium, or Large product sizes.
| Dimension | Dog measurement | Interior guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Tip of nose to base of tail, with the dog standing naturally. Exclude the full tail. | Add 2–4 inches (5.08–10.16 cm) to measured length. |
| Height | Floor to top of head, with the dog sitting upright. This is not shoulder or standing height. | Add 2–4 inches (5.08–10.16 cm) to measured height. |
| Width & movement | Observe the actual dog standing, sitting, lying naturally, and turning. | Check physically and follow the model’s instructions; this calculator does not calculate width. |
| Candidate crate | Measure actual usable interior length and height, accounting for the divider and bedding. | Compare each dimension independently with the guidance; also check doors and headroom. |
Illustrative example, calculated with the same method
A dog measuring 31 inches long and 27 inches high while sitting gives usable interior length 33 in – 35 in and height 29 in – 31 in.
Metric equivalents: body length 78.74 cm, sitting height 68.58 cm; interior length 83.82–88.9 cm, height 73.66–78.74 cm. This example identifies no product or nominal shopping size.
EXPLAINABLE EXTRA ROOM
How the clearance calculation works
Zoetis describes adding about 2–4 inches (5.08–10.16 cm) to each dog measurement. We show that full reference interval: measured length plus the clearance, and measured sitting head height plus the same clearance.
The lower end is this method’s lower guidance target; the upper end is its upper guidance target. These are not regulatory limits, a universally required minimum, or a maximum allowed crate size. More or less room needs an individual physical check.
Results use the original unrounded measurements. Display values are rounded sensibly; the checker compares unrounded dimensions with inclusive endpoints.
LOOK INSIDE THE CRATE
Usable interior versus exterior dimensions
Exterior dimensions describe the outside footprint. Usable interior dimensions describe the clear space the dog can occupy, after walls, door structures, and any divider are accounted for. Bedding also reduces available headroom.
Labels such as “24”, “30”, “36”, “42”, or “48-inch crate” are shopping terminology, not universal interior-dimension standards. Diggs Evolv publishes interior and exterior dimensions separately, illustrating why the exact model’s interior specifications matter. This tool makes no product-size match.
What size crate does a puppy need?
Use current measurements and check the puppy’s usable space now. Puppies grow, so remeasure regularly. A larger crate with an adjustable divider can be practical: measure the space on the puppy’s side of the divider and move it as they grow, preserving room to stand, sit, turn, and lie naturally.
Breed-based adult-size estimates are approximate and cannot replace later measurements. This calculator predicts no adult size and adds no invented growth allowance.
CHECK WITH YOUR DOG
How to verify a physical crate fits
- 01
Check natural movement
Confirm room to stand, sit upright, turn freely, and lie naturally. Check width with the actual dog; a length-and-height comparison cannot assess their turning space.
- 02
Check the usable openings
Inspect door-opening clearance, divider position, and available headroom with bedding installed. Check upright ears and standing head height as the manufacturer instructs.
- 03
Read the model’s instructions
Confirm its weight limit, construction, intended use, assembly, and closures. Dimensions alone cannot establish suitability. Ask the manufacturer when a dimension or fitting instruction is unclear.
HOME AND TRAVEL HAVE DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS
Home crates versus airline and vehicle travel
This calculator is for everyday home-crate guidance. Airline containers involve different formulas and additional measurements, including width, standing head or ear height, and elbow height. Check IATA’s official pet-container guidance and the particular airline’s current requirements before arranging travel.
Vehicle transport also needs separate equipment and restraint checks with the manufacturer and applicable transport guidance. A home-crate dimension result provides no airline approval, certification, crash-test assessment, or vehicle-safety assurance. No travel sizing engine is included here.
HELPFUL ANSWERS
Crate sizing questions
What size crate does my dog need?
Measure nose-to-tail-base length while standing and floor-to-head height while sitting upright. This tool adds the sourced 2–4-inch clearance interval to each measurement. Compare the resulting length and height with actual usable interior dimensions, then check width, movement, doors, headroom, construction, and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Is crate height measured at the shoulder or the head?
For this Zoetis method, measure to the top of the head while sitting upright. Shoulder height and standing head height are different measurements. Other manufacturers may use standing height or include upright ears; follow their method and confirm sufficient headroom for your dog.
Can I choose dog crate size by weight or breed?
Weight and breed are rough shopping context, not substitutes for an individual dog’s length, head height, proportions, and physical movement. A manufacturer’s weight limit is a separate construction constraint. The calculator uses neither weight nor breed to invent dimensions.
Does a 36-inch crate have 36 inches of interior space?
A nominal label is shopping terminology, not a universal usable-dimension standard. Exterior walls, door frames, bedding, and dividers can reduce usable space. Check the exact model’s published interior dimensions or measure its clear interior. This tool never converts exterior dimensions with a guessed subtraction.
How does bedding change the comparison?
Enter interior height before bedding, then optionally enter the height the bedding actually occupies. The checker subtracts it from height only. Blank bedding means no deduction is applied; zero is accepted explicitly. If you already measured above the bedding, leave that field blank to avoid subtracting twice.
What does “above upper guidance” mean?
It means that dimension exceeds the upper end of this 2–4-inch clearance reference. It is not an automatic unsuitable-crate judgment or a maximum permitted dimension. The comparison checks length and height independently and cannot establish physical fit.
Can I calculate without entering a candidate crate?
Yes. Only your dog’s length and sitting head height are required. The separate candidate checker needs both interior length and height before it can compare them. A partial candidate entry cannot block or change the main calculation.
Can I use this result for airline or vehicle travel?
This is everyday home-crate guidance. Airline containers use additional measurements and different formulas, plus carrier requirements. Vehicle transport also requires separate equipment and restraint checks. A length-and-height result provides no travel approval or vehicle-safety assessment.
ONE METHOD, EXPLICIT SOURCES
Crate sizing method and sources
Primary method: Zoetis Petcare home-crate guidance, checked October 9, 2026. The static example and calculator share the same source-defined clearance values. Both endpoints are included in candidate comparisons. Bedding is deducted from height only when supplied.
Other sources use different conventions. MidWest uses standing height; AKC describes nose-to-tail-tip length and different clearance. Diggs also has its own standing-height method. We do not combine those inputs or allowances with the Zoetis sitting-height method. Preventive Vet corroborates the selected nose-to-tail-base and sitting-height approach.
- Zoetis Petcare: The selected nose-to-tail-base length, sitting head height, and 2–4 inch clearance method.
- MidWest Homes for Pets: Standing-height measurement and adjustable-divider context; its method is not mixed into this calculation.
- Diggs Evolv: Separately published interior/exterior dimensions, standing/ear-tip checks, and bedding headroom; comparison context only, with no product match.
- Preventive Vet: Corroborates the selected length, sitting-height, and clearance method. We still require a separate width and turning check.
- American Kennel Club: Physical movement and divider context. Its standing-height, tail-tip length, and 3–4 inch method are not used here.
- IATA Traveler’s Pet Corner: Official airline-container requirements use additional measurements and different rules. This calculator provides no transport assessment.
All six sources were verified October 9, 2026. Sources and product specifications can change. Follow the selected manufacturer’s current measuring instructions; no brand database, product recommendation, or travel approval is calculated.
