Using PetSmart general harness reference
Percentages show position within a reference interval, not physical fit or safety.
We compare the unrounded measurement. A “≈” means a displayed value is rounded.
See the source and calculation methodThis is a chest-based retailer reference. Neck fit and product-specific measurements are not calculated. No category, boundary note, or percentage guarantees physical fit.
Chest girth cannot establish snout fit. For basket muzzles, use the muzzle measurement guide and the selected model’s shape and panting-space instructions.
AROUND THE RIB CAGE
How to measure chest girth
Girth is a complete circumference around the torso. Measure the dog, then follow the selected harness’s instructions for its own chart.
- Let your dog stand naturally and comfortably on all four legs.
- Find the widest part of the rib cage, generally just behind the front legs.
- Wrap a flexible tape all the way around that location, following the chest’s contour.
- Keep it close to the coat without squeezing or leaving a loose loop.
- Read and record the girth and unit. Measure again to check; add no arbitrary allowance for this calculator.
- Check the actual product’s measuring diagram and any additional required dimensions.
PUBLISHED RANGES, KEPT INTACT
Dog harness size chart
The chest-girth intervals below come from PetSmart’s general harness chart. Centimeters are exact conversions of its inch endpoints. Substantial overlap is part of the published chart, not a mistake to remove.
| Reference size | Girth in inches | Girth in cm |
|---|---|---|
| XX Small | 8 in – 10 in | 20.32 cm – 25.4 cm |
| Extra Small | 9 in – 15 in | 22.86 cm – 38.1 cm |
| Small | 13 in – 23 in | 33.02 cm – 58.42 cm |
| Medium | 18 in – 29 in | 45.72 cm – 73.66 cm |
| Large | 22 in – 39 in | 55.88 cm – 99.06 cm |
| Extra Large | 28 in – 44 in | 71.12 cm – 111.76 cm |
The calculator includes both endpoints and shows all matching categories. Breed, weight, and leash-width examples from the source are not used.
MORE THAN ONE LABEL CAN APPLY
Understanding overlapping sizes
At 22 inches, Small, Medium, and Large all include the girth. At 28 inches, Medium, Large, and Extra Large do. The result shows each interval separately so the overlap stays visible.
These categories are not ranked. Compare the actual harness’s full chart, adjustment range, and boundary instructions. Product-specific advice to size up is useful for that product, but this general reference does not make that choice.
KEEP THE MEASUREMENTS DISTINCT
Chest girth versus neck size
Chest girth wraps around the torso behind the front legs. Neck circumference wraps around the neck, and the measuring location can differ by harness design. One value cannot stand in for the other.
Some products need an additional front-chest measurement: PetSafe’s Easy Walk guidance distinguishes a measurement across the front of the chest from the girth around the rib cage. This tool uses only girth and cannot check those two-dimensional product requirements.

How to check harness fit
- 01
Adjust using its instructions
Use all the required measurements and fastening steps. The harness should sit snugly without excessive pressure. Its design determines strap placement and adjustment.
- 02
Watch natural movement
Let your dog walk. Check that shoulder and front-leg movement stays free and that straps do not rub behind the legs. Recheck where the harness sits as the dog moves.
- 03
Check for slipping
Follow the manufacturer’s security checks, including whether the harness can slide over the head or let the dog back out. If fitting remains unclear, ask the manufacturer for help.
Harness styles change what you need to check
A step-in design fits around different openings from a harness that goes over the head. Front-clip and back-clip describe attachment locations, not a shared size standard. Read the particular model’s chart and fitting diagram; neck openings, front-chest straps, and adjustment points can require extra checks. This calculator recommends no style or product.
THE SOURCE AND THE COMPARISON
Harness sizing method and sources
We compare unrounded chest girth with every PetSmart interval. Endpoints are inclusive as this tool’s documented reference convention; no universal product boundary rule is implied. Every match is returned in source order, without preference. Valid measurements outside all intervals receive a no-match explanation. No extra length, neck adjustment, breed estimate, or growth allowance is applied.
Position uses (measurement − minimum) / (maximum − minimum). The outer 10% is labelled near the lower or upper end as a display convention. It describes the interval only, not a verified adjustment margin, safety score, or confidence. Display rounding never changes the calculation.

HELPFUL ANSWERS
Harness sizing questions
How do I measure my dog for a harness?
With your dog standing naturally, wrap a flexible tape all the way around the widest part of the rib cage, generally just behind the front legs. Keep it close without squeezing and record the girth with its unit. This reference uses that measurement without adding length. Follow the chosen product’s method for its own chart.
Is harness size based on chest girth or weight?
This calculator compares only measured chest girth. Weight and breed cannot capture an individual dog’s proportions. The actual harness may also require neck, front-chest, or other measurements; check all the dimensions its chart asks for.
What if my dog is between harness sizes?
Overlapping reference ranges can include two or three labels. We show every match without ranking them. Recheck the girth, then compare the particular product’s chart and boundary instructions. A product’s advice to size up applies to that product, not to all harnesses.
Can I use my dog’s collar size?
A collar size or neck circumference does not substitute for chest girth. The neck sits forward of the torso and can use a different measuring location for a harness. Keep each measurement separately labelled and follow the product’s diagram.
Do harness sizes vary between brands?
Yes. Labels and girth ranges can differ between brands and models. Construction, closures, and adjustment points also matter. These PetSmart categories are a broad retailer reference and do not identify a particular manufacturer’s size.
How do I know if a harness fits correctly?
Adjust it using the manufacturer’s instructions, then check that your dog can walk naturally, the shoulders and front legs move freely, and straps do not rub behind the legs. Check that it cannot easily slide over the head or let the dog back out. A chart match or finger-space check alone does not prove fit.
What size harness does a puppy need?
Use the puppy’s current girth and the selected product’s chart. Recheck the measurement and physical fit regularly while they grow; adjust or replace the harness as needed. This tool adds no growth allowance and does not predict a future size.
